Sunday Sketchbook: Bahamas

My studio here in the frozen north is full of just started and almost finished canvases, so my apologies for sparse postings--but this Tuesday I'll be on a plane and ferry heading to my workshop in the Bahamas, so I'll have a painting a day to share for the next week (and from a warm place...)

Sharon, VT

Here's another Vermont town that, nestled between a mountain and river, was hit hard by flood waters this summer.

To purchase and donate to flood relief.

Moretown

The Moretown town hall--a lovely example of Vermont vernacular architecture--painted by me in the key of violet.

This is last Vermont town photo/painting left from my current flood relief sale! More photo/paintings in this series will be posted in the coming weeks, so stay tuned if you'd like another chance to buy one. I'll continue to donate 100% of sales to help Vermont recovery efforts.

Plainfield

The Winooski River, on a calm and peaceful September afternoon, flowing through the village at the bottom of my hill.

I've added this painting to my Vermont Flood Relief Art Sale--you can take a look here!

Vermont Flood Relief Art Sale

Up here on my hill we were lucky to escape Hurricane Irene without anything more than a wet basement, but just a few miles down the road, homes, farms and businesses were badly damaged by flooding. Many towns in central and southern Vermont (such as lovely Wilmington, pictured above) were devastated. Vermonters are pulling together and working hard to recover, but they will need some help.

So here's your chance to give that help to flood victims, and at the same time get a unique piece of art. I am donating all sales from my "Let Me Show You Vermont" mixed media series to the Vermont relief effort. Please take a look at the online show!

You can also make a direct donation to Vermont flood victims here.

You can see a photo record of flooding in Vermont here.

Small Town, Twilight

Sold
A light in a window on a wintry evening says "home" in a Vermont village.

This seemed like a fitting image for me to contribute to the Daily Paintworks online "images of home" auction to help Japanese people who have lost everything in the recent disaster.

Here's how you can help! Browse the sale starting at 1:00 pm on Saturday, and bid on a painting (including mine above) during the week's in-house auction. 100% of sales will go to a relief charity. You'll be getting a painting to enjoy, plus helping folks in great need.

Artists, please consider contributing a painting on the broad theme of "home". Click here for more information.

Route 7, Ferrisburg, Vermont

Check out my latest post on Let Me Show You Vermont to find out what the white building on the left side of Route 7 in Ferrisburgh has in common with the Pantheon in Paris.

Main Street, Bristol

Here's part of my latest posting of Let Me Show You Vermont, my own personal "On the Road" state-wide travel journal.

"I took a sharp right at Route 17 and headed up Stark Mountain, a winding, ear-popping climb past the Appalachian Trail to the summit's microwave tower at Buels Gore (getting out of the car there for a chilly look at the valley far below) and then a fast roll down the back side of Sugarbush into the town of Bristol."

Memory: Narrow Street, Umbria

Lights and shadows are tangible, positive shapes of color (as real as the stone buildings and pavement) on sunny mornings in these Italian hill towns.

Holsteins, Late Afternoon

My grandmother lived on the outskirts of Ithaca, New York, and when I visited her in the summer I felt happiness standing alone in her front yard looking at the cows, exotic and evocative to a me, a child from the suburbs, now all these years later standing in my own yard and feeling happy seeing cows across the road.

Memory: Cloud Shadows on Corn Fields

I love the look of old hand-tinted photographs, and here's my version. It's really difficult to believe in the middle of winter that the landscape will ever feel so lush and gentle again. That's one of the things I like about living with four very different seasons: how each one seems like it will go on forever, but always gives way to the next.
