Vermont Flood Relief Art Sale

Up here on my hill we were lucky to escape Hurricane Irene without anything more than a wet basement, but just a few miles down the road, homes, farms and businesses were badly damaged by flooding. Many towns in central and southern Vermont (such as lovely Wilmington, pictured above) were devastated. Vermonters are pulling together and working hard to recover, but they will need some help.

So here's your chance to give that help to flood victims, and at the same time get a unique piece of art. I am donating all sales from my "Let Me Show You Vermont" mixed media series to the Vermont relief effort. Please take a look at the online show!

You can also make a direct donation to Vermont flood victims here.

You can see a photo record of flooding in Vermont here.

the colors are spectacular...very saturated, but not over-the-top...a beautiful late afternoon VT image...thanks for contributing to the relief efforts...we live in such a beautiful place

Yes, we do live in a beautiful place, Christine, and resilient, too. I like these colors also-the oil on top of the photo gives an odd, vintage look to the image. I find I'm having to make all the kinds of color choices I do when painting without the photo there--with both kinds of mediums, I always like to try a sky that's other than blue!

Thanks for writing, sonsprinter. Glad you like this image. This part of Wilmington really got hit--the river inundated the historical buildings--hopefully they can recover.

That's such a beautiful painting and for such a good cause! The contrasts and the colors are wonderful! The brilliant reflection on the water was such a bold move (at least it would have been for me), and really made this piece glow with a special warmth!

Lovely work. I will forward your flicker page to several of my friends and family, many of whom had strong roots in Vermont and perhaps stir them to make a contribution and/or buy one of your lovely paintings.

Thank you, ontheroad. I appreciate your comment, and also forwarding on the sale announcement!

i think this one is my favorite! love the colors and the technique. I don't think i know of it. oil on b/w photo? did you use the acutal photo? or transfer it to another substrate? would love to know your process. at any rate, they are all beautiful and enjoy seeing your work. thank you for sharing.

Thank you for your comments and question, Carolyn! I came up with this mixed media approach when I was trying to figure out a way to have a color image for each town in my blog "Let Me Show You Vermont" that would be a bit different from my watercolors or oil paintings.

My process is: I take my digital photo, crop and desaturate it in my computer, print as a black and white on photo paper, size it with acrylic medium, then paint with oils on top of the sized photo. Some of the photo is still visible under the painting if transparent oil"washes" are used. Or if I paint more opaquely, little of the photo is visible. The color choices are the same as when I paint from nature, in that I have to invent them. I like the real/unreal quality these pieces have, and also the "vintage" look, which seems to suit the subjects.
