Study: Summer Field


The working landscape in Vermont of pastures, hay, and corn fields (in Provence, it's vineyards, orchards and lavender) creates a visual pattern, a variety of textures, shapes and colors that for me has a very different emotional impact than a vista that's all forest or all wheat field.

Study: Spring Field


Some fields and pastures in Vermont have a very English look, or maybe it's just that I see them through a filter of Constable, Girtin, Cotman and the rest of the British landscape painting pantheon.

Study: Winter Field


Each season transforms the look and function of a field--here it rests under snow, the energy it produced in warmer months wrapped in white plastic and ready to feed the cows waiting in the barn.

Sunday Sketchbook: Bequia


Right now from the window of my Marshfield, Vermont studio it looks like I'm in the middle of a snow globe blizzard. So here's a memory from a few winters back of a sunny sailboat deck in the middle of the blue Caribbean.
