Barnyard, Cloudy Morning

My blog's been quiet for the last week, as I've been reorganizing my studio (click here to see), preparing canvases for the new landscape series, and finishing this painting.

Here's the start of the second painting of my carnival trio, which at this stage feels like a vintage daguerreotype taken in the 1800's by an itinerant photographer of small town life.

One of three paintings I have underway inspired by an empty carnival ground on a village green I happened upon while driving a back road in Vermont.

I'm in my studio working on a new series of landscapes inspired by place (New England), mood (for you to interpret), composition (that geometry that underlies the seemingly random) and color (stay tuned!)

The Batey, bounded by a dangerous highway and open fields, has the feel of a small isolated village even though it's close to large towns. It is a busy place that lives its life in public, from children with younger siblings in tow playing in the dusty alleys, to the elderly who play dominoes or watch the activity from the shade of their front stoop.

Here is the first of five new oils inspired by the Batey Libertad, the Haitian community in the Dominican Republic that I visited last November. These paintings, along with my son Colin's photographs, will be featured in an upcoming show at the University of Vermont to benefit the Batey--say tuned for more details!

The underpainting for the middle panel of the triptych--as always at this stage, a one step forward, two steps back process of sneaking up on what it is I'm trying to say.

Here's the first stage of the left panel of my new "Mt. Tabor" triptych. The first two in this series were studies in summer sun and shadow, with strong rhythms of saturated color. This composition has the closer harmonies and quieter chromatic grays of winter light. Aren't painting and music twinned?
