Vines in Sun, Provence
Painting in a Provencal vineyard, it's easy to understate, and difficult to exaggerate, the intensity and purity of the colors of plants, ground, cast shadows, and distant mountains.

The expressive movement of the dark vine branches reminded me of a phrase from a poem, "The Woodlot" by Amy Clampitt, written about apple trees: "..under apple trees like figures in a ritual,..."
Love it! So abstract yet representing it all beautifully at the same time.
Thanks for that quote, Altoon. Those vines seemed like dancers to me as I was painting them...
Thanks for writing, Suzanne. This was one of those paintings (many are like this, actually) where I thought I was getting down the color and design that was so beautiful, right there in front of me, but by the end thought, maybe not. So I appreciate your seeing the abstraction in this one.
