A week from today I'll be leaving for Provence with my workshop group, and have another chance to try to get something down on paper in those last intense moments of changing color before night comes.
So much for something Mel Stabin said - something about not bothering to paint sunsets because it was impossible to capture the beauty. I think you definitely captured not the specificity of a particular sunset but the glorious feeling of "sunset." Thank you for sharing and have a wonderful time in Provence! Best- Sue Herbst
Thanks, Linda and Sue, for writing. I can understand Stabin's point of view--sunsets, gardens and babies all have to be approached with a critical painting eye, to avoid icing the already very sweet cake!
Oh, Susan, this painting and the one you posted on the 17th are so beautiful! Of course, I love all of your work. Such luscious colors! Have a wonderful time on your trip!

My visual journal is inspired by what I see every day: the weather on my hill in northern Vermont, what’s growing in my garden, a curio brought back from travels or an ordinary object from the kitchen shelf made special by careful looking. "Journal" paintings are fast, improvised daily entries, a chance to experiment with new approaches and pay attention to the here-and-now. When I’m traveling, quickly recorded impressions are posted from Paris, Provence, Spain, Maine and anywhere else I’ll find myself this year. My large studio compositions take time, planning, refining of the original inspiration. I'll also be sharing that different kind of creative process with you here on "A Painter's Year".
