Here's the second of the panels that will make up the finished painting "Motel on 302"--a composition I'll see only in my mind's eye until I finish the last panel, and can combine all nine paintings into one image.
I love the way the light hits the small white building. Your shadows are beautiful and your greens are really nice with the light. Great composition, too. Well done!
Thank you, Linda. As usual, the trees had as much blue and red as green--always a fresh surprise to me, though, when I start really looking at foliage.
The bright sunshine and deep shadows reminds me of some Eward Hopper. Cape Cod Morning and another at the Carnegie museum in Pittsburgh that I could not find a reference. Very nicely done.
Thanks for writing, Debbi, Cathy and Sdonoho. Two of you mentioned Hopper, so there must be something there...maybe mood. In Hopper's painting, as you point out, that mood comes as much from light and composition as from his subjects.

My visual journal is inspired by what I see every day: the weather on my hill in northern Vermont, what’s growing in my garden, a curio brought back from travels or an ordinary object from the kitchen shelf made special by careful looking. "Journal" paintings are fast, improvised daily entries, a chance to experiment with new approaches and pay attention to the here-and-now. When I’m traveling, quickly recorded impressions are posted from Paris, Provence, Spain, Maine and anywhere else I’ll find myself this year. My large studio compositions take time, planning, refining of the original inspiration. I'll also be sharing that different kind of creative process with you here on "A Painter's Year".

Gorgeous color. Light and shadows are so dramatic. Can't wait to see them all together!!!
This painting 'Motel 302' makes me think so much of Hopper!!! Maybe the light, the colours, or the emptiness? I don't know but I love it!!!!!!
