Cloud Shadows across Mountain

Fast moving sunlight and shadows across the mountain during a morning break from cloudy weather.

Nightrides (panel 2)

We're in the midst of a week of beautiful weather, but I've stayed in my studio to finish some larger paintings--here's another image from a multipanel piece inspired by twilight drives through small towns.

Riverbend Store, Early Evening

There's a feeling I get every time I drive towards this corner at dusk, and that's why we have paintings and poems and music, for feelings like that.

Storm Coming

Heavy winds and rain blew in late yesterday afternoon, and the farmer and I both finished our work just in time.

Last Year's Hay

I was feeling discombobulated in my studio today, as I always do after being away from painting for even a few days. So I packed up my brushes and pochade box and drove away from home in a dark and desperate mood. A few turns down dirt roads, and I found myself looking into this valley, and everything was all right again.

Sunday Morning

This room revolves around two rocking chairs. James found the wicker one on a curbside near Dupont Circle and it has followed him on many moves since then, finally ending up home in a farmhouse kitchen.

After Rain, Route 2

Driving in Vermont, there's usually a little bit of blue distance around the bend or over the hill. The mountains here are too old and weathered to loom and range, like in the West. Instead they just sit quiet on the horizon and wait for you to come closer.

Newton's Tractor

Most of the snow has disappeared, and fields and hedgerows up here on our hill slowly shift towards their summer colors. On Earth Day, watching and waiting for the change.

Night Ride (detail)

One of four panels in a painting I'm working on inspired by small towns, roads and dusk.

Driving West, Dusk

On my way home from Maine, heading through one of those small towns that aren't much more than an intersection.

Mountains from Studio, Evening

I'm settled back in my studio after being away for what seems like a long time. Spring arrived while I was gone: only patches of snow now on the Worcester Range, and the Red Sox on the radio as the sun sets.

Orchard at Dusk

Looking out my studio window, past the barn, to a grove of apple trees asleep under a blanket of snow.

Marshmallow Bales, Sunset

At Newton's place at the top of my hill, as cold as it looks. Marshmallow bales eliminate the need for farmers to store dry hay in barns. Usually I'm sorry (from the artist's and luddite's point of view) to see white plastic instead of golden bales in the fields, but this innovation makes life easier for strapped farmers, and sometimes has its own particular beauty.

Last from the Garden

Right before our first snowfall I went out to finish cleaning up the garden beds, and found this last eggplant hanging on amidst its withered brethren. The tomatoes were also lonely survivors from long-gone summer. (You will never find a tomato that shade of yellow in a grocery store.) I bought the patterned cloth in Fells Point, Baltimore in the 1970's at a big, funky fabric emporium, and it's moved with me to many studios since then.
