Luberon Valley after Storm

Every summer I paint at least one big, distant view of the valley behind Les Bassac, and it's always different. Weather, time of day, even the shifting darks of cloud shadows create endless variety in this wonderful landscape (and to add historic interest, Julius Caesar camped in this valley on his march through Gaul.)

The Blue City

I'm back working in my studio on my Vermont landscape series, but before I return to posting those New England compositions again, here's one more plein air painting from my trip to India. I was using the ramparts of an ancient fort as my easel, and looking over towards the "Blue City" of Jodphur. The man walking in the foreground towards me appeared at the last minute, and his addition in the composition gave some sense of scale to this vast, empty valley.

Memory: Moonhole Beach, Bequia

Every now and then during our frozen white winter I look at paintings from my visit a few years back to this beautiful island, and hope I have another chance sometime soon to be painting cerulean blue water in the middle of January.
