Sunday Sketchbook: Bahamas

Yesterday I painted an oil and watercolor, drew in my sketchbook, and had lunch in a restaurant with a dock that overlooks the Hope Town harbour. No matter how middling the food, being able to sip a cold Kalik beer and draw boats will no doubt lure me back there again many times.

I love your sketchbook entries, how you arrive at your composition and the notes you make really interest me.

Hi, Anne, thanks for writing. I always start a painting by making a compositional sketch, which helps me figure out the placement of the shapes withing the format, decide on values, and note color relationships. It really helps me figure out the main idea, and not get distracted by details.
