Sunday Sketchbook: Vermont

Driving south in Vermont this week I was sad to still see damage from Hurricane Irene along stream beds and river banks, with many homes empty, and businesses (such as this restaurant near Sharon) closed until further notice.

Your work is great; your comment makes me sad. I love Vermont and yearn to be back.

Thank you for writing. The good news about flood damage here is that most roads are open, and many people are back in their homes. Some of the businesses, like the one pictured here, have new windows and siding, so hopefully they'll be back soon, too.

The best news is how Vermonters pulled together in response to the devastation caused by the flood. We saw that these small communities have real strength in times of crisis.
