Sunday Sketchbook: Provence

My plein air paintings usually begin with a quick gesture sketch that helps me figure out composition, values, and in this case, colors. The challenge is to keep hold of this "premier coup" ("first blow", a great description of the visual idea) through hours of painting.

I think the reason I do not use a sketch book is because I just do not get that freedom of the flowing and loose pen/pencil that most artists seem to get. I love your sketchbook work! The addition of the color, especially in the shadows is beautiful!
