You don't see many small herds of Holsteins wandering pastures in rural America: the new dairy model is the "Confined Animal Feeding Operation"--thousands of cows lined up in stanchions, producing milk full of antibiotics and hormones, waste that's polluting their community's ground water, and (unlike this Vermont farm) not much in the way of motifs for landscape painters.

Your comments about the passing of small family dairy operations are so true, and for me, sad. The brilliant colors you employ here are very appealing, and it's interesting that my eyes go to the cow in the foreground first, even though she is in shadow
