Early Spring Bouquet


There's been an explosion of daffodils and grape hyacinths in our dooryard this week--so many blooms that I've been picking bunches and bringing them into the kitchen, dining room and studio without my usual guilt about deflowering the garden.

After Rain, Route 2


Driving in Vermont, there's usually a little bit of blue distance around the bend or over the hill. The mountains here are too old and weathered to loom and range, like in the West. Instead they just sit quiet on the horizon and wait for you to come closer.

Sketchbook: Baseball


We've been watching Colin play baseball since he was he was four feet tall and hitting with a whiffle bat. This year we'll be in the stands at his high school for the last time. Somehow it's happened that he's six feet tall now, and next spring I'll be drawing him on a college field without that familiar, sheltering mountain in the background.

Most of the snow has disappeared, and fields and hedgerows up here on our hill slowly shift towards their summer colors. On Earth Day, watching and waiting for the change.

Cut Limes


Oranges say winter but limes speak of hot afternoons (like today) and the cold drink on the dirt next to me as I kneel to plant early peas.
