Apple Slices


This series of small paintings has shown me just how big a 4" x 4" canvas can be, in the same way a gesture figure drawing taught me how much time there is in a minute.

French Pitcher and Grapes


Every summer I fly back from Provence with my carry on bag filled with crockery that I bought at the market in Apt. The glazes (like this mustard yellow) are strong, unusual colors, so evocative of the place where they're made.

Memory: Chair in Sun, Provence

The light in southern France is famous for its strength and clarity. Shadows there have the palpability of solid forms, except of course they are transparent and allow warmth and color through their cool, definite shapes. A painter could spend a lifetime in Provence (as Cezanne did) trying to figure that out.
