Each season transforms the look and function of a field--here it rests under snow, the energy it produced in warmer months wrapped in white plastic and ready to feed the cows waiting in the barn.
This whole series of watercolors has been wonderful, but the light in this piece is so outstanding. With it you've captured the sense of a wintertime late afternoon in Vermont.
The glow in this painting is just beautiful. I love it all but especially the subtle blending in the upper left. When I try to get that effect in a sky, I usually end up losing the glow of the yellow and ending with something grayish!
I darkened that area after the warmer color underneath had dried, Laura. I try to always glaze with a pure color--otherwise too many colors get combined, and compliments layered will grey or brown.

My visual journal is inspired by what I see every day: the weather on my hill in northern Vermont, what’s growing in my garden, a curio brought back from travels or an ordinary object from the kitchen shelf made special by careful looking. "Journal" paintings are fast, improvised daily entries, a chance to experiment with new approaches and pay attention to the here-and-now. When I’m traveling, quickly recorded impressions are posted from Paris, Provence, Spain, Maine and anywhere else I’ll find myself this year. My large studio compositions take time, planning, refining of the original inspiration. I'll also be sharing that different kind of creative process with you here on "A Painter's Year".

Thank you. Those marshmallows make life easier for farmers, and also have beautiful reflective color!
