Sunday Sketchbook: London

From my last trip to London, Monday, October 6th, 7:30 pm:
"On the #24 bus again, this time from Charring Cross Road to Victoria. My family calls my propensity for staring at strangers 'creeping", and I know I do stare. But I wonder about them-who are they, where are they going, what's their life like?"

oh it's so much fun drawing people on public trasport. Love the combo of notes and colors here

Thanks for your comment, Olha. I love that too--stealth drawing techniques are required, haven't you found? The painter Avidor Arikha commuted to a studio in Manhattan for a time , and made a wonderful series of subway drawings (some are reproduced in monographs on his work.)

I was thinking like Olha - people watching (and sketching) is the best part about riding the metro, the bus, any public transport! ;-)) and I LOVE seeing other artists sketchbooks....it's like another way of sharing a 'conversation'!
cheers, Roxanne

No doubt you've read Virginia Woolf's "Mrs. Brown" -- starts with a woman, a stranger, in a railway carriage and goes on--way on-- from there.

No, Clair, I haven't read that, but I'll put it on my winter sit-by-fire list. The novel form is so different from visual art, which is so akin to poetry. (Many painters write poems, don't know of many who attempted a novel.) Must be that both painting and poetry are about the accumulation of observed details into a clear and ambiguous image. Moments that stay in the moment.

check out Urban Sketchers http://www.urbansketchers.com/ - lots of commuters drawing here. Avidor Arikha's stuff looks wonderful, thanks.

Thanks, Olha, I'll check that site out. I guess we're another tiny niche group within the wider art world!
