Study: Road Element

I've been posting studies for my "Place Element" series--here are those watercolors combined in a "four-season" composition. (The finished oil "Road Element" will have four 12' x 12" panels framed together in local Vermont maple.)

I imagine that painting fast in watercolor must be like improvising a jazz solo: a need not to think too much, to just get something down, trying to keep pace with perceptions and feelings from moment to moment.

Sunday Sketchbook: India

I was lucky enough a few years back to spend three weeks traveling through Rajasthan with my sketchbook, watercolors, and an adventurous group of painting students. The view from my seat on our bus was sometimes harrowing (will that family on the motorscooter make it around the truck and donkey cart in time, or will they hit that cow wandering across the highway?) and always amazing.
